THE VIBE

Perched above Merano, surrounded by vineyards and orchards, VINEA is a place where life naturally slows down. Combining the freedom of spacious apartments with the comforts of a boutique hotel, this adults-only retreat is designed for guests who appreciate privacy, thoughtful design and the quiet beauty of South Tyrol. From the moment you arrive, you'll notice the personal touch of the host family, whose love for the region can be felt throughout the property.

The name VINEA means vineyard – a fitting tribute to the landscape that inspired the hotel. Host Anna grew up among the vines, and her connection to South Tyrol is reflected in every detail. The terraced architecture echoes the surrounding vineyards, while her own photography tells the story of the vine through the seasons. Some of the images even feature her grandfather Karl, preserving precious family memories that have become part of the hotel's identity.

South Tyrol's heritage is woven into the design in subtle ways. A traditional Waalweg – the historic irrigation channels that have shaped the region's vineyards and orchards for centuries – inspired the entrance area, creating a beautiful connection between nature, local history and contemporary architecture.

Despite its clean lines and modern design, VINEA never feels minimalist or distant. Perhaps it's the warmth of the natural materials, perhaps it's the peaceful setting above Merano – or perhaps it's simply Anna herself. Her genuine hospitality, local recommendations and passion for sharing her favourite corners of South Tyrol make every stay feel personal, relaxed and wonderfully authentic.

THE STAY

Spacious apartments, complete privacy and views you'll never tire of – that's what makes a stay at VINEA so special. The property features 32 beautifully designed apartments and suites, along with three elegant double rooms. Enjoy the freedom of preparing your morning coffee in your own kitchen while still indulging in the comforts and service of a boutique hotel.

Natural oak wood, locally sourced Passeier gneiss and warm, understated interiors create a timeless sense of comfort. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame ever-changing views across the Merano region, the Vinschgau Valley and the Passeier Valley, bringing the landscape right into your living space.

We wake up to the first rays of sunshine, slide open the balcony doors and breathe in the crisp mountain air. By evening, the lights of Merano and nearby Schenna begin to sparkle below, transforming the valley into a sea of twinkling lights.

After a day spent hiking, there's no better place to unwind than the rooftop wellness area. A Finnish sauna, steam room, infrared cabin and panoramic bio sauna offer plenty of ways to relax, but our favourite spot is the heated saltwater infinity pool. With mountain views stretching into the distance and an aperitif in hand, this is South Tyrol at its most effortless.

Several times a week, complimentary rooftop yoga sessions invite guests to greet the day surrounded by mountain peaks and fresh Alpine air. It's a peaceful way to slow down before setting off to explore the region.

THE FOOD

The aroma of freshly baked bread fills the air each morning. In the light-filled Urban Lounge, breakfast is a celebration of South Tyrol's flavours, with an emphasis on regional ingredients and homemade specialities. Many of the products come from local producers, while others – including the naturally cloudy apple juice and homemade jams – are sourced directly from the family's own farm.

What we love most is the balance between quality and simplicity. Eggs are prepared to order, flaky croissants are served warm, and the buffet is filled with seasonal fruit, local cheeses, fresh pastries and South Tyrolean delicacies. As the morning sun slowly rises over the vineyards, it's the kind of breakfast you'll want to linger over.

The hotel's connection to wine continues throughout the Urban Lounge, named after Saint Urban, the patron saint of winemakers. Natural oak, dark metal accents and carefully chosen design details create a warm, contemporary space that subtly reflects the region's rich wine culture.

Perhaps the most meaningful detail, however, is one you might easily overlook. The blue apron once worn by Anna's grandfather Karl is still proudly worn by the team today – a quiet reminder that, despite its modern design, VINEA remains deeply rooted in its family traditions and South Tyrolean heritage.

THE ADVENTURE

One of the things we love most about Dorf Tirol is the contrast. You can spend the morning hiking through the mountains and the afternoon wandering the elegant streets of Merano with a cappuccino in hand. With its Mediterranean climate, panoramic trails and close proximity to the spa town, it's the perfect base for discovering one of South Tyrol's most diverse regions.

More than 70 kilometres of marked hiking trails begin right on the doorstep. Follow historic Waalwege through vineyards and orchards, enjoy leisurely panoramic walks or venture higher into the Texel Group Nature Park, where alpine lakes and dramatic mountain scenery await. Cyclists will find just as many opportunities to explore the surrounding valleys and mountain roads.

One of the highlights of our stay is the sunrise hike to the Hochmuth viewing platform. We set off long before dawn, climbing through the quiet forest as the first light begins to colour the sky. By the time we reach the platform, the sun is rising over the peaks, casting a golden glow across the vineyards, the Etsch Valley and the rooftops of Merano. It's one of those mountain moments that stays with you long after you've returned home.

If you're in the mood for a slower pace, take the scenic two-kilometre walk to Tyrol Castle. Perched high above the village, this historic fortress tells the story of South Tyrol while rewarding visitors with sweeping views across the valley.

Merano is never far away either. A short ride on the panoramic chairlift connects Dorf Tirol with the town below, making it easy to spend an afternoon exploring its elegant arcades, boutique shops and riverside promenades before returning to the peace and quiet of the mountains.

Before leaving, make time for the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle. Spread across 12 hectares, more than 80 beautifully designed garden landscapes showcase plants from around the world, all framed by spectacular mountain views. It's the kind of place where an hour effortlessly turns into an afternoon.
