ANSITZ ROMANI

TRAMIN - SOUTH TYROL

There’s something about this place. Maybe it’s the centuries-old walls, the scent of rosemary in the garden, or that warm, easygoing vibe that wraps around you like a soft blanket. Whatever it is, your shoulders relax, your heart feels lighter – and the idea of leaving? Yeah… suddenly not so appealing. Could be Armin’s unforgettable cooking. Could be Sabine’s smile that makes you feel instantly at home. Most likely, it’s everything together.

WHAT'S THE VIBE?

It’s not just the Mediterranean sunshine that makes your shoulders drop the moment you arrive – it’s the calm, the warmth, that seems to linger in every corner of this place. Ansitz Romani doesn’t feel like a hotel. It feels like somewhere you’re simply meant to be. Peaceful, unfussy, full of gentle charm. Maybe it’s the scent of rosemary in the midday heat, or the way the old stone walls seem to hold onto stories. Or maybe – most likely – it’s the people who bring it all to life.

Because hospitality here isn’t a job. It’s just how things are done. Sabine is the heart of the house, Armin – award-winning chef and friendly face – is just as likely to welcome you at the door as he is to be stirring sauces in the kitchen. Their three kids – Dominik, Yuri and Vivienne – pitch in naturally, like it’s the most normal thing in the world. There’s no stiff formality here, no choreographed service. Just a quiet, genuine way of making people feel completely at ease.

"You should run a hotel the way you’d love to be a guest. No rules, just follow your gut. If you do it the way you’d want it done for you – and treat people the way you’d want to be treated – that’s when it feels real. And people notice. That’s when it works."

- Sabine -

The garden is a little Mediterranean haven. Palms, olive trees, lemons hanging in the sun. Life hums gently in the background. The natural pool bubbles quietly in one corner; in another, your eyes drift over the vineyards. You sit. You read. You say nothing. And at some point, without noticing, something inside you lets go. This atmosphere? It’s not curated. It’s grown. Real. Felt. And often, it stays with you longer than you stay with it.

wHAT'S LIKE TO STAY HERE?

At Ansitz Romani, you don’t just stay somewhere – you stay between centuries. This lovingly restored 14th-century estate is full of history, but it never feels old-fashioned or fussy. Think: ancient stone walls that whisper stories, without shouting for attention. Instead, they set the stage for a timeless kind of comfort that feels completely grounded in the here and now.

Armin had always dreamed of running his own restaurant. After years in fine dining, the opportunity suddenly appeared: a slightly forgotten, ivy-covered manor was up for sale. He and Sabine didn’t think twice. With passion, patience, and an eye for detail, they spent two years bringing the place back to life. “The restaurant under the vaulted ceiling used to be a stable – we literally pulled out the old feed troughs,” Sabine says with a laugh. Above it, they created seven spacious apartments and three double rooms. Twelve years later, they took on the crumbling silk-spinning barn, transforming it into five modern suites full of space, light, and effortless style.

Every corner was renovated with care – warm wooden floors, tasteful furniture, handpicked fabrics. It all feels intentional, elegant, and beautifully understated. Old-world character meets modern-day design in a way that’s seamless, not staged.

Each retreat is airy, spacious, and full of natural light. Love historic charm? Pick one of the apartments with centuries of soul. Prefer clean lines and a calming vibe? The modern suites have you covered.

And that’s really the magic here: old and new blending naturally, not competing for attention. History doesn’t just sit in the background – it quietly becomes part of your stay.

WHAT's ON THE MENU?

Let’s be honest: Armin doesn’t cook – he works magic. His kitchen is a delicious meeting of South Tyrolean roots and Mediterranean flair. Depending on the season and what’s fresh at the market, he creates tasting menus full of heart, flavour, and the occasional surprise. Sometimes bold, sometimes delicate – always unforgettable. And always paired with excellent local wines from the vineyards around Tramin.

Breakfast is a laid-back affair: homemade, regional, and served right to your table with love. There’s good coffee, of course – and if you’re lucky, a tip from Sabine on what to explore that day.

Come evening, Armin’s multi-course dinners are the kind that make you pause mid-bite just to sigh in happiness. Crisp vegetables, tender meats, herbs from the garden – and those sauces. Honestly, etiquette be damned: if you don’t sneak a little plate-lick, you’re missing out. Our personal favourite? The bread. Golden crust, soft inside. The sourdough starter came all the way from Apulia and has been around for 65 years – older and wiser than most of us. It’s treated like part of the family here. And yes, it’s dangerously easy to fill up on it alone.

As for where you eat – that’s up to you. Under the vines outside? Cosy inside the vaulted dining room? Either way, every meal tastes like arrival, presence, and just the right touch of something special.

One last thing: Armin’s cooking has a bit of a reputation, and not just within these walls. So if you’re planning to dine in – book early! And on the quiet nights (Sundays & Mondays)? Just help yourself to a treat from the honesty bar – a glass of wine, a little snack, and a quiet toast to the good life.

WHAT's THERE TO DO?

BETWEEN VINES AND TRAILS

Tramin sits in the sun-drenched south of South Tyrol – where rolling vineyards, wooded hills and small wineries create a landscape that simply begs to be explored. From Ansitz Romani, you can set off right on foot. The Gewürztraminer Trail passes just outside the door, winding through vines with gorgeous views and local stories along the way. Or head to the other side of the valley and walk the Pinot Noir Trail – equally beautiful, equally fascinating.

NATURE WITH A WOW FACTOR

Craving a little adventure? Don’t miss the Rastenbach Gorge above Lake Kaltern – with wooden walkways, waterfalls, and dramatic ravines, it’s like stepping into a fairytale.

In spring, the “Spring Valley” near Montiggl Forest is a must. From March to April, the forest floor explodes into colour – snowdrops, violets, liverworts – and the air smells like a new beginning.

LAKE KALTERN: SUN, WATER, RESET

Lake Kaltern is a classic for a reason. Go for a swim, try stand-up paddling, or just dip your toes and let the world slow down. It always works.

PEDALS, PATHS & PANORAMAS

Tramin is a cyclist’s dream. Road bikers love the winding climbs – especially the legendary Mendel Pass. Mountain bikers can hit the scenic trails above Kaltern or Tramin for a more rugged ride. Prefer things on the mellow side? The valley floor is full of gentle, scenic routes – including the old Fleimstal railway line, now a gorgeous bike path. Bikes are available at Ansitz Romani – just grab one and go!

WINE, OF COURSE

Tramin is the birthplace of Gewürztraminer, one of the world’s most aromatic white wines. Local wineries, farm taverns and wine shops invite you in to taste, chat and learn – some are traditional, others sleek and modern, but all are passionate. Many winemakers are happy to show you their cellars, share their stories – and pour a glass that tastes like sunshine and South Tyrol itself. And yes, there’s wine at the Romani too: Son Dominik, an enthusiastic hobby winemaker, sometimes hosts cozy tastings with his own homemade wines – plus cured meats and local snacks. Not to be missed!

SOMETIMES, JUST STAY PUT

And some days? The best plan is no plan at all. Start with a morning yoga session in the garden – among palms, olive trees and birdsong (every Thursday) – then ease into a day of poolside reading, lazing, or doing absolutely nothing.

Because that, too, is what holidays are for.

SMALL TOWNS, BIG VIBES

Fancy a bit more buzz? Bolzano and Merano are just a short drive away – perfect for a day out. Bolzano offers bustling markets, arcaded streets, museums and a hint of Italian flair. Merano charms with Art Nouveau villas, thermal baths and riverside walks with a touch of old-world elegance. Both blend South Tyrolean culture, Alpine charm and Italian dolce vita in their own unique way – a lively contrast to the gentle calm of the Romani.
