Mountain Hideaways - Wellnesshotel

MILLA MONTIS

MERANSEN • SOUTH TYROL

The gently curved wooden façade of Milla Montis takes its cue from the old mountain barns and haylofts of South Tyrol. The original inspiration? A simple hayfork — though with a little imagination, you might just see hearts instead. A fitting symbol for this place of warmth, grace, and quiet beauty, shaped by hosts who pour their hearts into every detail.

THE VIBE

At MILLA MONTIS, the answer to “How’s everything?” is almost always the same: “Couldn’t be better.” And truly, it’s hard to disagree. Franziska and Roland Oberhofer – or simply Milla, as their house name affectionately goes – run their place with that effortless South Tyrolean ease that makes you feel part of the family from the very first smile.

It’s no surprise this mountain hideaway earned a Michelin Key – recognition for its rare blend of heartfelt hospitality, refined design, and the artful balance between nature and architecture.

Franziska is the warm presence you’ll meet everywhere – at reception, chatting over coffee, or serving dinner with her trademark sparkle. Roland is the creative force in the kitchen, taking family recipes and giving them a modern, soulful twist. Together, they’ve made MILLA MONTIS far more than a hotel – it’s a way of life, shaped by authenticity and quiet confidence.

They’re joined by Roland’s parents, Margareth and Benno – the heart and steady hands behind it all. Margareth greets guests with a laugh and a story, serving breakfast and dinner as if welcoming old friends. Benno, ever calm, keeps things humming smoothly in the background.

Designed in collaboration with Peter Pichler Architecture from Milan, the building makes a striking statement – bold, sculptural, and yet perfectly at home among the peaks. As the sun sets, its dark timber façade glows softly in gold; the curved lines seem to breathe with the land, mirroring the rhythm of the meadows and sky.

The design nods to the old mountain barns of South Tyrol – its gentle arches inspired by the shape of a hayfork, though some swear they see hearts instead. Either way, it’s the perfect metaphor for this place: warm, graceful, and full of quiet emotion that lingers long after the day is done.

THE STAY

From the outside, MILLA MONTIS makes a bold first impression – that dark timber façade against the mountain sky, confident and sculptural. Step inside, though, and everything softens. Light spills through wide windows, the air feels calm and clear, and nature is never more than an arm’s length away. Franziska and Roland have thought of everything – from soft green loden fabrics to pale ash wood and sleek South Tyrolean stone. Every detail hums in quiet harmony.

All 14 rooms and 16 suites face south, drawing your eyes across the Eisack Valley to the Dolomites beyond. Floor-to-ceiling windows turn every room into a private lookout; in the spa suites, even the bathtub comes with a view. Watching the peaks blush pink at sunset while you soak in warm water – that’s a memory that stays.

The Montis Spa is a sanctuary where peace isn’t chased, it simply unfolds. A sauna, steam bath, herbal relaxation room, and an infinity pool that opens at 7 a.m. for early-morning swimmers – there’s no better way to greet the day than gliding through still water as the first sunlight touches the peaks. Outside, plush daybeds on the wide green lawn invite you to stretch out, sip a cocktail, or indulge in a scoop of homemade gelato.

Those looking to go deeper into calm will find hidden yoga spots scattered around the property – a meditation room, forest clearings, even a quiet place by the stream. Once a week, guests can join a guided yoga session, though no one would blame you for just listening to the wind instead.

Come spring 2026, MILLA MONTIS is expanding its wellness world – adding a new relaxation room, sauna, and whirlpool, plus four new room categories. A place evolving with grace, always true to itself – unmistakably, beautifully Milla Montis.

THE FOOD

At MILLA MONTIS, South Tyrolean tradition meets a touch of culinary artistry – the kind you can actually taste. The recipes come straight from the Oberhofer family kitchen, but Roland and his team give them a contemporary twist: refined yet grounded, elegant yet effortless. In the open kitchen, you can watch them at work – calm, focused, and quietly brilliant. There’s no showmanship here, just craftsmanship. And flavor. Lots of it.

Dinner presents only one real challenge: where to look first – at the beautifully plated dish in front of you or the Dolomites glowing pink through the panoramic windows? As daylight fades, the restaurant transforms into a stage of soft light and slow moments, where food, view, and mood blend into something quietly unforgettable.

And because great taste never stops at the plate, Sommelier David hosts a weekly wine tasting – a journey through local and Italian vintages, paired perfectly with Roland’s creations. It’s relaxed, charming, and just informative enough to make you feel like you’ve learned something… before the next glass appears.

THE ADVENTURE

Right behind MILLA MONTIS, the Wilde Kreuzspitze rises into the sky — at 3,132 metres, it’s the highest peak in the Gitschberg Jochtal alpine region. But don’t worry, you don’t have to conquer a summit to feel on top of the world. Along the way lies the Wilde See at 2,532 metres — a mirror-clear mountain lake where the peaks lean in close to admire their reflection. Equally beautiful, and perhaps even more serene, is the Seefeldsee at the end of the Altfasstal valley — a place so still, it feels like time pauses to take a breath.

If you’re after something gentler, explore the mountain pastures around Gitschberg and Altfasstal — meadows that seem painted in every shade of green. Our personal favourite? The Dumont “Widen Your Horizon” trail, a loop that perfectly combines alpine bliss with spectacular views.

And since you can spot the Rodenecker-Lüsner Alm right from the hotel terrace, you might as well pay it a visit. This wide, sun-drenched plateau is made for slow walks and big views — summer or winter, it’s all about breathing deep and taking your time. You can even get there using public transport, free with the Almencard, your thoughtful welcome gift from the hotel.

Whether you’re chasing summits, strolling from hut to hut, or pedalling through mountain air, the Gitschberg Jochtal region is pure paradise for nature lovers. And if you’d like some company on the trail, check the weekly hiking programme on the notice board at MILLA MONTIS — or just grab your boots, step outside, and let the mountains do the rest.
