DER*ADLER
BREGENZERWALD - VORARLBERG
Almost three centuries old – and not the slightest bit weary. The Adler in Schoppernau is a true Bregenzerwald original: a timber-clad house that carries its history with pride while embracing
the present with ease. Every beam tells a story, warmth comes as naturally as the mountain air – and from the moment you step inside, it feels just a little like coming home.

Why ADLER SCHOPPERNAU stole our hearts:
- Tradition with character: Here, heritage isn’t preserved behind glass – it’s lived, reinterpreted and shaped by genuine craftsmanship, quiet confidence and a design language that speaks softly but stands out.
- Hospitality from the heart: Now in the hands of Sandra and Simon Muxel, the third generation of the family, the Adler is run with heartfelt passion, authenticity and that graceful blend of simplicity and style that makes guests instantly feel they belong.
-
A sense of ease, with a view: From breakfast to nightcap, from sauna to skyline – life at the Adler is about slowing down, savouring the moment and soaking up that
        unmistakable Bregenzerwald feeling.

ADLER is the place to be if you're:
- Food lovers & storytellers: From the generous breakfast spread to the cosy Bauernstube and the laid-back s’Frie café – this is where good food, good drinks and good conversation come naturally.
- Nature seekers & mountain souls: Whether it’s the Kanisfluh, Mittagsfluh or Diedamskopf – the mountains are never far away, and adventure begins right outside the front door.

THE VIBE
You feel it the moment you arrive: the Adler in Schoppernau breathes history — through every hand-carved beam and time-worn shingle. This Bregenzerwald house has seen nearly three centuries of life: once a farmhouse, now a little hotel gem that wears its heritage with pride — and looks effortlessly good doing it. The brown wooden shingles glow warm in the sun, while red shutters wink with rustic charm.
For more than 70 years, the Muxel family has been the heart and hands behind the Adler. Each generation has carried the house gently into the present — never losing sight of its roots. Today, Sandra and Simon Muxel continue the story in its third generation, with genuine passion, fresh ideas, and an instinct for what truly matters.
When they last renovated in 2021, they didn’t just refresh a few rooms — they created a wellness retreat that feels like a deep exhale: calm, modern, and full of quiet beauty. And because standing still has never been their style, the new Apartment House across the street followed in 2022 — a bright, contemporary chapter of the same heartfelt story.
What really defines the Adler, though, is the feeling that lingers in the air: warmth, honesty, and a sense of belonging. The kind of place where breakfast can easily turn into a chat, and dinner into friendship — perhaps over a glass of wine in the 150-year-old Bauernstube, or a late-night drink in the legendary Adler Bar.
And because the Adler is not just a hotel but a beloved local inn, anyone is welcome to drop by for lunch or dinner — in the cosy dining room or out in the garden beneath the old chestnut tree. A place that’s open, alive, and full of soul.

        THE STAY
THE MAIN HOUSE
Which of the Adler’s 21 rooms is our favourite?
Good question — and honestly, one that deserves a deep sigh. Because the Franz Michl and Kaspar categories are all so lovely that the only sensible answer might be: all of them. One for every mood, or every day.
Walls in soft clay plaster, warm timber underfoot – everything feels crafted, tactile, authentic. The bathrooms are light-filled and generous, dressed in hand-finished cream tiles and elegant natural stone. And then there’s the dark green velvet sofa – long, bespoke, and so irresistibly comfortable that you might forget there’s a bed waiting just behind it.
Because the rooms are set within the historic main house, no two are alike – and that’s exactly their charm. One opens to a view of the Kanisfluh, another invites you to curl up by the window and watch the forest climb the hillside, while a third boasts lofty beams and that unmistakable sense of space. Each has its own character – just like the guests who stay here.
The same thoughtful touch runs through the wellness area: small, serene, and beautifully designed. Families have it to themselves until 3 p.m., then it turns into an adults-only haven. The heat? As you please – 90°C in the Finnish sauna, 55°C in the bio-sauna, or gentle warmth in the infrared cabin. Outside, a whirlpool bubbles invitingly down a set of sandblasted concrete steps; inside, blue alcoves and soft loungers call for doing absolutely nothing.
The view drifts over the orchard and up to the Kanisfluh, with cows grazing lazily to one side and the evening sun bathing it all in gold. It looks perfectly staged – but it isn’t. It just happens here. Every single day.

THE APARTMENT HOUSE
Those who prefer a little more space and independence will find their happiness just across the road, in the Adler’s new Apartment House – the fresh, modern counterpart to the historic main building. Bright, stylish, and utterly relaxed, it shares the same signature blend of warmth and design.
Fifteen apartments – each generous, comfortable, and full of light – offer room for two to eight guests. Every one features a modern kitchen, and some even come with a private sauna. It’s alpine clarity with a contemporary twist: ideal for families, friends, or anyone who likes to travel their own way without giving up that unmistakable Adler feeling.

THE FOOD
If you love good food, good coffee and the occasional good gossip, you’ll fit right in at the Adler. This is one of those places where the day has a rhythm all its own — and somehow, it always seems to revolve around something delicious.
Morning begins with the smell of freshly baked bread and coffee strong enough to make you smile before the first sip. The breakfast buffet is generous, local, and far too tempting for anyone with even a trace of willpower. Take your time — nobody here is in a hurry.
At lunchtime and in the afternoon, the mood drifts between the rustic charm of the Bauernstube and the shady garden under the chestnut tree, where light dishes and crisp drinks arrive with the unspoken invitation to stay a while.
For a more urban touch, there’s the s’Frie day café in the Apartment House – bright, easygoing, and just the right kind of stylish. It’s the place for leisurely breakfasts, homemade cakes and small plates paired with artisan coffee from regional roasters. Later in the day, s’Frie transforms into a little bar with aperitivi, cocktails and craft beers. And if you’re a beer lover, you’ll be in good hands – Simon has a knack for great brews, always something new to try and never a dull pour in sight.
Evenings at the Gasthof Adler are a more elegant affair – à la carte or as part of the half-board menu, a five-course journey that takes classic Alpine cooking and lifts it gently into the realm of fine dining. Traditional, but never predictable.
And when the night winds down, there’s still the glow of the Adler Bar or the quiet comfort of the Kaminstüble, where the last drink of the day tastes best beside the crackle of the fire. It’s the perfect ending to a day that always seems to have one more flavour to discover.
VILLA MAUND – THE EVENT LOCATION
When an occasion calls for a grander stage, the Adler knows just the place: Villa Maund – stylish, secluded, and graced with a generous touch of exclusivity. Set on a sunny forest clearing above Schoppernau, framed by mountain peaks and alpine meadows, the villa sits like a small fairytale château made for life’s big moments.
Built in 1890 by the English banker and mountaineer Sir John Oakley Maund, it was once a hunting lodge where celebrations were taken seriously – and not only for the game. Maund clearly knew how to enjoy life: good food, good wine, good company. And today, that same spirit lives on – perhaps a little more refined, but still wonderfully joyful.
Weddings, anniversaries, summer soirées – whatever the reason to raise a glass, Villa Maund is made for it. And because flawless celebrations are an Adler specialty, the team takes care of everything: shuttle service, catering, and every thoughtful detail that turns a beautiful day into something truly unforgettable.

        THE ADVENTURE
SUMMIT BLISS – THE CALL OF THE KANISFLUH
Rooms with a view of the Kanisfluh, spa sessions with the same mountain in sight — sooner or later, you’ll want to climb it too.
The Kanisfluh, the unmistakable symbol of the Bregenzerwald, rises proudly with sheer cliffs on one side and gentle meadows on the other. From the Adler, it’s a 20-minute drive to the Edelweiss at Öberle, where a scenic trail winds up to the Holenke, the mountain’s highest peak. The hike takes about an hour and a half — with sweeping views from the top and, if you’re lucky, a few curious ibexes keeping you company along the way.
Kanisfluh – Hike to the Holenke summit (2,044 m) from Öberle: ⇄ 5,4 km • 560 m ascent • 2.5 hours

WALK, RIDE, WANDER – ADVENTURES START AT THE DOOR
Right from the front steps, Schoppernau offers paths that meander through meadows, forests and alpine slopes – the kind that make you stop for no reason other than to breathe it all in. Sandra and Simon know the best routes, of course – they’re always out exploring and full of local tips.
Prefer pedals to hiking boots? Bikes are available right at the Adler, and the region’s cycling routes are as scenic as they are satisfying. A favourite ride loops around the Mittagsfluh, passing blooming alpine pastures and the postcard-perfect hamlet of Schönenbach – where a stop at Gasthaus Egender for legendary Bregenzerwald cheese spaetzle is not optional. (Trust us. You’ll thank us later.)
VIEWS FOR DAYS – SUMMER ADVENTURES WITH A VIEW
Stay three nights or more at the Adler (and between us, three is the bare minimum), and you’ll receive the Bregenzerwald & Großes Walsertal Guest Card – your ticket to the mountains.
Hop on the Diedamskopf cable car right from Schoppernau, glide up effortlessly, and after just 70 easy vertical metres on foot, you’re standing on the summit with a view that stretches from the Bregenzerwald to Lake Constance. They say there are around 300 peaks to spot – we didn’t count, but we believe it.
Equally breathtaking: a ride on the Bezau cable car. The Panorama Loop Trail takes about 1.5 hours, 180 metres of ascent, and delivers 100% pure wow. Both cable cars also offer sunset rides, when the mountains glow gold and rose — the kind of moments that end up framed on your wall (or at least all over your Instagram).
WINTER WONDERLAND – WHERE SNOW FEELS RIGHT AT HOME
When winter arrives, Schoppernau turns into a snow globe. The ski bus stops right at the door, whisking guests to the family-friendly Diedamskopf in minutes. The heavyweights – Ski Arlberg (Lech-Zürs, Warth-Schröcken & St. Anton) and Mellau-Damüls, Austria’s snowiest resort – are just a short ride away.
For cross-country skiers, 63 kilometres of perfectly groomed classic and skating trails start right in the village.
Those who prefer it slow will fall in love with snowshoe hikes through untouched landscapes – just the crunch of snow and the kind of stillness that takes your breath away.
Guests of the Adler enjoy complimentary access to all trails with the WinterCard, plus free use of snowshoes, poles and maps. Because here, adventure should never be a matter of logistics.
