THE VIBE
What strikes you right away: nothing here feels staged. For three generations, the hosts have been deeply rooted in Matrei – and it shows. They’ve created a place that thinks modern but feels traditional. Regionality isn’t a trendy label – it’s a mindset. Sustainability isn’t a concept – it’s part of daily life.
That the "Outside" is at the heart of Naturhotel Outside isn’t just a slogan on the wall – it’s something you feel. In the open design that draws your gaze toward the mountains. In the choice of local materials, like the striking East Tyrolean serpentinite stone Dorfergrün, grounding the space in its alpine origins.

THE STAY
There’s something quietly magical about the spaces at Naturhotel Outside. It’s the natural materials that do it – clay walls, raw timber, cosy wool and linen textures. Nothing polished, nothing over-styled. Just honest design that lets nature take the lead.
Every room feels like a gentle exhale. The kind of place where your shoulders drop the moment you walk in. Big windows pull your gaze to the mountains. And if you're lucky enough to stay in one of the Nature Suites, you’ll sleep in a solid larchwood bed, with the calming scent of stone pine and a natural room climate that seems to slow time itself. It's understated luxury at its best – not loud, not showy, just right. The Nature Suite Plus is a beautiful lesson in restraint. No clutter, no fuss – just space to breathe, light to bathe in, and design that whispers instead of shouts.
And then there's the spa. Oh, the spa. A full 1,000 square metres of pure alpine serenity, indoors and out. Start with a swim in the 20-metre natural pool, tucked into the sunny new spa garden – the perfect post-hike cool-down. Or soak in the 35°C outdoor pool, cleverly designed to conserve energy by gently storing its warmth underground when not in use.
Inside, things stay true to the hotel's grounded elegance: five saunas, an indoor pool wrapped in shimmering gold and silver leaf, and relaxation rooms that are, quite simply, a joy to be still in.
But perhaps the real star? The Defereggen brine pool – a 35°C saltwater bath fed by 600,000-year-old healing water from deep beneath East Tyrol. One of the most powerful natural remedies you’ll ever float in.

THE FOOD
It all begins in the morning – with the smell of freshly baked bread, homemade jams, organic eggs, and velvety coffee from a small family roastery just across the border in Carinthia. And from there, the day just gets more delicious.
Afternoons are made for light indulgence: perhaps a soothing bowl of soup, a crisp salad, or a slice of homemade cake enjoyed out on the sun terrace, with the hotel’s home mountain keeping watch in the background.
Evenings? They’re for the grand finale: a beautifully curated six-course dinner that blends East Tyrolean roots with a touch of gourmet flair.
The kitchen carries the AMA quality seal, and most ingredients are sourced straight from local farmers and producers. Whether you eat vegetarian, vegan, or prefer a more classic approach – every dish is crafted with thought and care.
The three Falstaff forks are a lovely nod to its quality. But honestly? What really matters is that every meal here feels like a celebration – not just of food, but of flavour, creativity, and the good life.

THE ADVENTURE
Tucked into the heart of Matrei, Naturhotel Outside is perfectly placed for anyone itching to get out and explore East Tyrol’s wild side. You’re right on the doorstep of the Hohe Tauern National Park – one of the most breathtaking alpine landscapes in Europe. And whether you're heading out with a certified guide or following your own path, the mountains here are generous with their beauty.
As a proud member of the Wanderhotels group, Outside goes the extra mile (or mountain): 3 to 4 guided hikes each week are included, as well as a free ranger tour through the national park. There are walking poles and backpacks to borrow, an e-bike station, and bikes to rent for your own two-wheeled adventures.
And oh, the options. You could wander through the peaceful Trojeralm Valley and stop for a bite at the Trojer Alm hut. Or take the dramatic Dabaklamm gorge trail to the charming Bergeralm.
For cyclists, the legendary Jagdhausalmen make for an unforgettable ride – or head up to the Lucknerhütte for views of the mighty Großglockner. Feeling ambitious? The Johannishütte at the foot of the Großvenediger is worth every pedal stroke.
Mountains, valleys, hidden trails, alpine huts… the only thing you’ll wish for? More time.
