When autumn turns the Eisack Valley to gold and copper, it’s the perfect time to hike the Panorama and Chestnut Trails in Feldthurns. Sunlight filters through glowing leaves, every step rustles with fallen chestnuts, and the view sweeps across to the Geisler peaks shining in the crisp South Tyrolean air. A gentle hike for deep breaths, quiet wonder – and a stop to enjoy roasted chestnuts and a glass of young local wine.
In the idyllic Eisack Valley, autumn brings a season unlike any other – Törggelen, South Tyrol’s very own “fifth season.” When the grapes are harvested and the vineyards glow in shades of gold, locals and travellers alike set out on gentle hikes along the Chestnut Trail. The reward? A cosy stop at a traditional farmhouse, where roasted chestnuts, new wine and laughter warm the air long after sunset.
An easy family hike in the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, just above the village of Rein in Taufers, leads to the eight weathered hay barns known as the “Lobisa Schupfn.” From this picture-perfect spot you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the Rieserferner glacier peaks – the mighty Hochgall, Riesernock, Wildgall and the distinctive 12er Nock standing guard above the valley.
Some hikes simply have it all: whispering forests, sparkling streams, a touch of adventure along the way – and a rustic alpine hut waiting at the end. That’s exactly what the trail through the Rehbach Gorge to Hinterschießling Alm in the Wilder Kaiser has in store.
