A HIDDEN GEM IN SCHEFFAU

This hike from Scheffau is a true insider’s tip for anyone who wants to experience nature, history and alpine indulgence all in one. From the car park in the village centre, the trail first follows a short bend uphill along the road before a marked sculpture points the way into the forest.

WHISPERING WOODS & BABBLING BROOKS

From here, the path meanders alongside the gently gurgling Rehbach – rooty in parts, sometimes on the left, sometimes on the right, crossing little wooden bridges that zigzag over the stream. The scenery is more charming than dramatic: the scent of moss and pine, birdsong in the trees, sunlight sparkling on the water – a trail that instantly slows you down and fills you with calm.

A DASH OF ADVENTURE

Every now and then the trail adds a dash of adventure: a short section is secured with a rope – never difficult, but just exciting enough to keep things interesting. And then, almost out of nowhere, a mysterious cave appears. In fact, it’s an old mining tunnel dating back to the 16th century. Those who dare can crawl inside and take a step back in time. For kids it’s pure thrill – and for adults, an unexpected little bonus along the way.

ALPINE BLISS ON THE MEADOW

A few steps later, the forest suddenly opens up and you step out onto wide alpine meadows. And there it is: the Hinterschießling Alm – a rustic mountain hut with plenty of outdoor seating and that incomparable view of the Wilder Kaiser. On the tables you’ll find hearty platters of cured meats and cheese, fresh farmhouse bread and, for a sweet finale, a slice of homemade cake. Exactly the kind of treat you dream of after a leisurely hike.

MOUNTAIN BREAKFAST

One absolute highlight is the mountain breakfast (advance booking required). Expect homemade spreads and jams, warm, crusty bread straight from the oven, Angus ham and salami from the Alm’s own herd, plus creamy yoghurt with fresh fruit and a crunchy muesli. Depending on the season, there are always a few extra delights to discover. And the setting? Simply unforgettable – as the morning sun paints the meadows golden and the peaks of the Kaiser glow in soft shades of pink. Pure alpine magic.

TWO WAYS BACK

For the way back, you’ve got two options. If you prefer it easy-going, simply follow the forest road that winds gently down alongside the gorge. Fancy a bit more variety? Turn the hike into a circular route and head back via the Gasthof Jägerwirt. That way you’ll get a fresh perspective on the landscape – and perhaps even another tasty stop along the way.
