THE VIBE

From the outside, the hotel resembles an oversized hay barn – a familiar sight in the Werdenfelser Land, where such structures dot the surrounding fields. Step inside, however, and it quickly becomes clear: this is a place where atmosphere is carefully, almost artfully, created. A modern, refined homage to the region runs through the entire hotel – rooted in tradition, yet reimagined with a confident, contemporary twist.

It begins at the reception and library, where a mirrored rock formation stretches upwards, creating a sense of depth and quiet drama. From there, the space flows into cosy alcoves reminiscent of weathered stone caves, anchored by a gently crackling fireplace. This is also where you’ll find the heart of the “Naschwerk” – a relaxed spot where, come lunchtime or afternoon, flammkuchen and homemade cakes make their way to the table. On warmer days, the covered terrace by the stream, bordering the spa gardens, becomes the perfect setting for coffee or a refreshing drink.

This thoughtful blend of Bavarian heritage and playful design continues in the restaurant’s inviting dining rooms. The “Heustube” pays tribute to rural life with table legs crafted from old hay racks and lampshades made of dried hay, while the “Alpinium” offers a softer, more contemporary feel, with woven lighting casting a warm, ambient glow.

And then there’s the location. Right in the centre of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, yet surrounded by trees and mountains, it feels quietly removed from it all. The lush greenery of the spa park grounds you, while the sweeping views of the Zugspitze invite your gaze to wander. Built from solid wood, the hotel radiates warmth – a place of both strength and lightness. It’s this effortless blend of nature, design and genuine hospitality that creates a deep, lasting sense of contentment.

THE STAY

As the tall trees of the spa gardens sway gently outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the rooms themselves feel like a calm retreat. Warm woods, soft loden fabrics and a palette of muted tones create a cosy, grounding atmosphere. One charming detail you’ll quickly notice: a small cabinet above the bed that always holds a little surprise.

With eight different studios and suites, the spaces are designed to suit a variety of needs and preferences – each one featuring either a balcony or a private garden, with views stretching out towards the park or the surrounding mountains. It’s the kind of place where lingering comes naturally.

Up on the rooftop, the Spa opens up an entirely different perspective. The pool seems to merge with sky and peaks, while the saunas offer a welcome moment of stillness after a day outdoors. On colder days, the cosy relaxation room with its fireplace and panoramic windows becomes a favourite spot; in warmer weather, the spacious terrace invites you to stretch out under the open sky.

While Werdenfelserei doesn’t position itself as a classic wellness hotel, the spa feels like a destination in its own right – one you’ll want to take your time with. For something truly special, there’s the Night Spa: candlelight, starry skies and a glass of champagne, designed for quiet moments together.

The rooftop is also home to a well-equipped fitness area, where guests can train using their own body weight. TRX straps, kettlebells and fascia rollers are available for independent workouts, while guided fitness sessions and yoga classes are part of the weekly programme – complimentary and easy to join.

THE FOOD

There are few better ways to start the day than with an unhurried breakfast – and at Werdenfelserei, it feels like a small celebration every morning. Expect lovingly prepared egg dishes, fresh herbs, crusty bread and a generous spread that leaves little to be desired. And then there’s the highlight: Kaiserschmarrn for breakfast. Yes, really – and it’s every bit as indulgent as it sounds.

Throughout the day, the in-house spot “Naschwerk” keeps things delightfully easy-going, serving homemade cakes, seasonal salads and freshly baked flammkuchen – perfect for a relaxed bite in between.

Come evening, however, there’s one thing we’d strongly recommend: reserve a table at the à la carte restaurant “Wurzelwerk.” Chef Sven Karge and his team bring a fresh take to Bavarian classics – think traditional dishes, reimagined with creativity and a modern edge. Or, as they like to put it: just like grandma used to make, only a little more refined. Regional and seasonal ingredients are transformed into beautifully presented plates, and the menu allows you to curate your own three- or four-course dinner – whether you lean towards meat, fish, vegetarian or vegan options.

The bar “NEUN10” is where afternoons gently transition into evenings. A favourite among both guests and locals, it leans into the roots of classic bartending – less sweetness, more depth. Expect timeless cocktails, well-crafted mixed drinks and a few signature creations. Best of all: let the passionate bar team guide you – they know exactly what they’re doing.

THE ADVENTURE

A stay in the Werdenfels region – and especially in Garmisch-Partenkirchen – is defined by its raw beauty, its unmistakable Bavarian charm and a mountain backdrop that never quite loses its impact. Peaks, lakes and dramatic gorges create a playground for both active explorers and those simply looking to slow down.

Up high – to Germany’s highest peak
The classic excursion? A trip up the Zugspitze. At 2,962 metres, Germany’s highest mountain delivers views that are nothing short of spectacular – best enjoyed with a drink at the country’s highest beer garden. And after admiring it from afar at the hotel, there’s something deeply satisfying about standing at the top and thinking: we made it up there.

Lake Eibsee – straight out of a postcard
Right at the foot of the Zugspitze lies one of Germany’s most beautiful lakes. The circular trail around Lake Eibsee takes about two hours and offers ever-changing perspectives along the way. Whether you opt for a boat ride or a refreshing swim in its crystal-clear waters, this is one of those places that simply belongs on your Garmisch itinerary.

Three lakes, one perfect hike
Beyond Eibsee, the region is dotted with smaller, equally enchanting lakes. One of the most scenic routes leads from Klais past three of them: Grubsee, Barmsee and Geroldsee. Around 11 kilometres, gentle elevation gain and countless moments to pause, take it in – and, inevitably, reach for your camera.

Partnach Gorge – nature at its most dramatic
The Partnach Gorge is a highlight in every season. Rushing water, towering rock walls and narrow passageways make it an unforgettable experience – whether in summer’s lush greenery or winter’s icy stillness. It’s also the starting point for a variety of hikes into the surrounding mountains.

Exploring Garmisch-Partenkirchen
The town itself is well worth your time. Wander through the historic Ludwigstraße in Partenkirchen, lined with traditional frescoed houses and cosy cafés, or explore the more contemporary side of Garmisch with its boutiques and green spaces. Landmarks like the Olympic ski jump or the Michael Ende park add another layer to the experience – proof that there’s more here than just the mountains.

On two wheels – cycling with a view
From gentle rides through the Loisach valley to more demanding mountain bike routes, the area offers something for every level. Wide alpine meadows, forest trails and scenic climbs make exploring by bike both varied and rewarding – and with an e-bike, even longer distances feel effortless.

A touch of romance – by horse-drawn carriage
For something a little more special, the hotel’s host Franz Erhardt offers carriage rides through the region. In summer, you’ll pass blooming meadows and quiet village streets; in winter, it’s all about snow-covered landscapes, warm blankets, the soft sound of bells – and perhaps a glass of mulled wine along the way.
