NESSLERHOF

GROSSARL - SALZBURG

At Nesslerhof in Großarl, a holiday becomes a feeling. The Neudegger family calls it Natural Happiness – that rare sense of slowing down, letting go of everyday life, and appreciating the simple moments that matter most. Surrounded by the breathtaking peaks of Austria's Grossarl Valley, it's easy to understand why so many guests return year after year. Some come for the spa, others for the mountains or the exceptional cuisine. But what truly stays with you is the feeling of being exactly where you want to be.

THE VIBE

Nesslerhof makes an impression from the moment you arrive. Not just because of its contemporary architecture, expansive spa, or beautifully landscaped gardens, but because everything seems to slow down. The mountains suddenly feel closer, everyday life fades into the background, and before long you find yourself doing exactly what you came for: simply enjoying the moment.

The Neudegger family calls this feeling Natural Happiness. It's not about luxury for luxury's sake, but about finding joy in life's simple pleasures – your first coffee on the terrace, a swim in the outdoor pool, or an afternoon spent in the Living Garden, watching the sunlight dance across the water.

Tina and Hermann describe themselves and their team as "guest whisperers" – a playful way of saying that genuine hospitality is all about paying attention. It's the warm welcome, the thoughtful details, and the sincere care that make every guest feel seen.

Perhaps that's why so many people return year after year. As Tina put it best during our conversation:

"I don't think our guests are simply looking for a hotel. They're looking for a feeling."

THE STAY

The rooms and suites at Nesslerhof strike the perfect balance between contemporary design and cosy comfort. Natural oak or rich walnut, elegant marble, and brushed gold accents create interiors that feel refined without ever losing their warmth. Open-plan bathrooms add a wonderful sense of space, while floor-to-ceiling windows frame the surrounding mountains like living artwork.

Many rooms feature spacious balconies or terraces, while some suites take things a step further with a private sauna, whirlpool, or even their own pool – perfect for a little extra privacy.

As lovely as the rooms are, we found ourselves spending surprisingly little time in them. Every corner of the hotel invites you to linger a little longer, whether that's beside the natural swimming pond, in the 25-metre outdoor pool, or unwinding in the adults-only spa with its saunas and soothing onsen pool. What impressed us most was the sense of space. Even when the hotel is busy, it never feels crowded.

Families have their own indoor pool and textile sauna, while active guests can start the day with yoga overlooking the mountains, join a Reformer Pilates session, or work out in the well-equipped fitness studio. A wide range of beauty treatments and massages completes the experience.

THE FOOD

At Nesslerhof, great food is woven into every part of the day. After a generous breakfast featuring freshly baked bread, regional specialties, and made-to-order egg dishes, the next highlight is never far away.

The afternoon buffet is surprisingly generous, with fresh salads, soups, savoury dishes, local cheeses, homemade cakes, and plenty of regional flavours. We especially loved that coffee, tea, and soft drinks are included throughout the afternoon. It almost feels like an all-inclusive experience – just with the thoughtful, understated style that defines Nesslerhof.

In the evening, the restaurant serves an elegant multi-course menu inspired by the seasons and the region. Much of the meat comes from the family's own butcher's shop, while many other ingredients are sourced from trusted local producers in the Grossarl Valley.

If you'd like to take a taste of the region home with you, stop by Grossarler Genuss, a small shop where local producers offer many of the delicious specialties you'll have discovered during your stay.

THE ADVENTURE

WHAT TO DO AROUND NESSLERHOF

If you love the mountains, you'll quickly fall for the Grossarl Valley. Scenic summit hikes, traditional alpine huts, and countless hiking and biking trails make it a paradise for anyone who loves spending time outdoors.

No visit would be complete without stopping at one of the valley's many mountain huts. We certainly didn't manage to visit all 40 of them, but we're happy to make one bold claim: our hike to Breitenebenalm and Karseggalm rewarded us with the best Kaiserschmarrn and the best local cheese sandwich we've tasted in the Alps.

For an unforgettable mountain moment, head up Schuhflicker, Nesslerhof's local peak, for sunrise or sunset. The panoramic views over the Grossarl and Gastein valleys are well worth the early start.

In winter, Nesslerhof's location becomes even more appealing. The modern Kieserlbahn gondola departs just opposite the hotel, taking you directly into the Grossarltal–Dorfgastein ski area. From there, you'll have access to Ski amadé, Austria's largest interconnected ski region. Here, ski-in, ski-out isn't just a promise – it's reality. If you're visiting in December, don't miss the enchanting Grossarl Mountain Advent, one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in the Alps.

Of course, some of the most memorable moments happen without ever leaving the hotel. Morning yoga by the natural swimming pond, a private dinner beside the water, or even a night under the stars are just a few of the experiences that make a stay at Nesslerhof feel truly special.

It's this wonderful combination of unforgettable mountain adventures and quiet moments of indulgence that keeps guests coming back year after year.

One of our favourite hikes leads to Schuhflickersee and onwards to the Schuhflicker summit. Whether you visit at sunrise or sunset, the panoramic views across the Grossarl and Gastein valleys are unforgettable.
